In early November, Mexico carries out a number of celebrations for what is known as Day of the Dead. People who have died come to live with us, Novermber 1st. is of the day of little angels, that is, the spirits of children. November 2nd. is dead saints day. It is a tradition to visit cemeteries, create altars, do prayers and pilgrimages; another common practice is the drafting of what mexican call Calaveras.
Calaveras are satirical short poems that, as an epitaph or obituary, make a humorous comment on the character and actions of the living. They generally use rhyme, but for being popular, these characteristics are not needed. These poems are published in the press, distributed in copies and read in cafes, gatherings and parties.
Thus, BCWSO invites you to participate and strengthen friendship by laughing of our own vices because we are human and death is our greatest fault. Here is a calavera as shown, and we will be sending more these days.

Estaba la muerte beoda
llorando su soledad,
junto al difunto murciélago.
Le había enseñado la edad
a brindar con los difuntos:
dio un sorbo de alcohol al crudo
y renació Murcia-Diego.

Feb 25: El Paso Artworks Network Meeting

VSA arts of Texas invites you to attend the next Artworks Network meeting in El Paso.

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

12:00-1:00 pm

El Paso Community College - Valle Verde Campus

Conference Room B 240

919 Hunter, El Paso, TX 79915

A map is attached

This is a group of artists with disabilities of all disciplines who get together to share their art form, share resources, and connect with the local art community. The session meets in Liberal Arts 403 from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

To reiterate:
There will be no outside reading or homework; all that is required is your presence for one hour each week for eight weeks. We ask that all students interested in teaching a creative writing class in the future (including this summer and Fall 2009) attend the colloquium. Students attending all sessions will be first pick for teaching creative writing courses. (We hope to offer three or more sections of Intro to Creative Writing to TA's each term in the future. These will be a combination of English only, bilingual, and Spanish only courses.)

Those completing the eight-session colloquium will receive a certificate of completion.

Please Note: Those with obligations to attend the English Dept. pedagogy workshops will not be penalized for having to leave early on the days of those workshops. Here we will post news, ideas, on going projects, reviews of events and what-nots so that you can learn what's going on in the lives of these writers of El Paso.

Why a blog?
1. Because we dig blogs. Blogosphere is a great way to loose time, and when looking back, seeing that you left something imprinted about your memories.
2. Because we can write anything, and whatever, and make it public to you.
3. Because the new students we are hopping to attract (come small sweet innocent new students!) can thus see some stuff about classes, events, and opinions in a more direct way. (I mean, I would have loved a preview of how Professor X teaching method was... or ...)
4. Because this is easier to maintain alive than a webpage. Webpage is like a presentation card, but this is more dynamic.

So... expect to hear news soon.

Next posts:
*"Why did we change the name from MFASO to BCWSO?"
*"BCWSO: Objectives and other Definition things"
*"Who we are"
*"Lectures Series!"

++++++++++++++++++++++++

Siguientes posts:
* “Porqué el cambio de MFASO a BCWSO?”
* “BCWSO: Objetivos y otra info de esa importante que nos define”
* “Quienes somos: nuestro pequeño rincón de la fama”
* “Series de Lecturas!”
