March 31: Deadline for Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholars Progra

Dear Graduate Students,

The University of New Mexico's Latin American and Iberian Institute invites applications for the 2009-2010 Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholars Program. The program provides fellowships enabling junior faculty members and graduate students from the United States and abroad to use the resources of the Latin American Library collections at UNM.
The grants are intended for scholars from institutions who do not have access to extensive Latin American library resources.

The Greenleaf Visiting Library Scholars program provides three separate awards: one long-term (minimum three months) award for $10,000 and two short-term (minimum two weeks) awards for $2,000 each to help defray travel and housing costs for Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Creative Writing Teaching Colloquium

Dear Writers,

This is just a reminder that the eight-week creative writing teaching colloquium will begin this week, on Friday, Feb 20. The session meets in Liberal Arts 403 from 12:00-1:00 p.m.

To reiterate:
There will be no outside reading or homework; all that is required is your presence for one hour each week for eight weeks. We ask that all students interested in teaching a creative writing class in the future (including this summer and Fall 2009) attend the colloquium. Students attending all sessions will be first pick for teaching creative writing courses. (We hope to offer three or more sections of Intro to Creative Writing to TA's each term in the future. These will be a combination of English only, bilingual, and Spanish only courses.)

Those completing the eight-session colloquium will receive a certificate of completion.

Please Note: Those with obligations to attend the English Dept. pedagogy workshops will not be penalized for having to leave early on the days of those workshops. We simply ask that you attend the sessions as possible, and come to the beginning of the three sessions from which you will have to leave early.

The schedule for the colloquium has changed to account for Good Friday (April 10), as the University is closed on that day, and is now as follows.

EL HONORABLE AYUNTAMIENTO DEL MUNICIPIO DE BOCA DEL RÍO, ESTADO DE VERACRUZ
DE IGNACIO DE LA LLAVE Y FICTICIA EDITORIAL CONVOCAN A:
Premio Nacional de Cuento “Juan Vicente Melo”
Premio Nacional de Novela “Luis Arturo Ramos”

En ambos casos, el premio consistirá en:
a) Publicación de la obra ganadora en Ficticia Editorial en co-edición con el Honorable Ayuntamiento de Boca del Río, dentro de los
120 días posteriores a la fecha de emisión del fallo del jurado.
b) Entrega de un Diploma de Honor durante la ceremonia de premiación.
c) Distribución y comercialización nacional de las obras ganadoras.
d) Presentación de ambos títulos en las siguientes Ferias de Libros: Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL), Guadalajara; Feria Internacional
del Libro del Palacio de Minería, México, D.F.; Feria Internacional del Libro Universitario (FILU), Xalapa.
BASES
1. Podrán participar todos los escritores mexicanos radicados en el país y extranjeros residentes en la República Mexicana. Los partici-
pantes extranjeros deberán tener como mínimo cinco años de residencia comprobable en México.
2. La recepción de trabajos se abre con la publicación de esta Convocatoria y cierra el viernes 08 de mayo de 2009 a las 18:00 horas.
En el caso de los trabajos remitidos por correo o por mensajería, se aceptarán aquellos en los que coincida la fecha del matasellos o
del envío con la del cierre de la convocatoria.
3. Los trabajos deberán enviarse al Centro Cultural de Boca del Río, ubicado en la avenida Veracruz número 320, código postal
92490, colonia Centro, Boca del Río, Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave; especiﬁcando el género en el que participan.
4. Todos los concursantes deberán ﬁrmar su trabajo con seudónimo. Adjunto al trabajo, en sobre cerrado y rotulado con el mismo
seudónimo (plica), enviarán su nombre, domicilio, número telefónico, correo electrónico y una breve hoja curricular. Los participantes
extranjeros deberán adjuntar copia de la forma migratoria que los acredite como residentes.
5. Los concursantes al Premio Nacional de cuento “Juan Vicente Melo” deberán enviar un libro de cuentos de su autoría, inédito en
su totalidad y escrito en español. Los originales deberán enviarse por triplicado, debidamente engargolados y deberán tener una
extensión mínima de 80 cuartillas y máxima de 120. El texto deberá estar escrito en computadora, con fuente tipo Times New
Roman, de 12 puntos, a doble espacio, en papel tamaño carta y por una sola cara. Además, deberán adjuntar un disco compacto
con la versión electrónica de la obra en formato Word, debidamente rotulado con el nombre de la obra y el seudónimo.
6. Los concursantes al Premio Nacional de Novela “Luis Arturo Ramos” deberán enviar una novela de su autoría, inédita en su
totalidad y escrita en español. Los originales deberán enviarse por triplicado, debidamente engargolados y deberán tener una
extensión mínima de 100 cuartillas y máxima de 200. El texto deberá estar escrito en computadora, con fuente tipo Times New
Roman, de 12 puntos, a doble espacio, en papel tamaño carta y por una sola cara. Además, deberán adjuntar un disco compacto
con la versión electrónica de la obra en formato Word, debidamente rotulado con el nombre de la obra y el seudónimo.
7. El incumplimiento de cualquiera de estos requisitos, así como la inclusión de cualquier tipo de leyenda, dedicatoria o referen-
cia que pueda sugerir la identidad del autor causará la descaliﬁcación automática del trabajo.
8. Las plicas de identiﬁcación serán depositadas en una notaría pública de Boca del Río, Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave.
9. No podrán participar:
a) Trabajadores del Honorable Ayuntamiento de Boca del Río, Veracruz De Ignacio de la Llave.
b) Trabajadores de Ficticia Editorial.
c) Obras que se encuentren participando en otros concursos regionales, nacionales o internacionales o a la espera de
dictamen por alguna casa editorial.
d) Obras que hayan sido premiadas con anterioridad en premios regionales, nacionales o internacionales.
e) Trabajos que se encuentren contratados o en proceso de producción editorial.
10. Una vez emitido el fallo del jurado, se procederá a la apertura de las plicas de identiﬁcación y a la notiﬁcación de los
ganadores. El resultado se divulgará por medio de la prensa nacional el domingo 19 de julio de 2009 y a través de las
páginas electrónicas www.cultura.boca.gob.mx/literatura y www.ﬁcticia.com
11. El jurado caliﬁcador estará integrado por personalidades de reconocido prestigio en el ámbito literario nacional,
cuyos nombres se darán a conocer a la publicación de los resultados.
12. El fallo del jurado será inapelable. Será facultad del jurado descaliﬁcar cualquier trabajo que a su criterio no presente las características exigidas por la convocatoria, así como resolver cualquier caso no referido en la misma.
En ambos casos, el jurado podrá declarar el premio desierto.
13. El Honorable Ayuntamiento del Municipio de Boca del Río, Estado de Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave, cubrirá
los costos de traslado desde cualquier punto del territorio nacional y atenderá los gastos de su estancia en Boca
del Río, Ver., para que asistan a la ceremonia de premiación. Ésta habrá de celebrarse el martes 4 de agosto en el
marco del II Festival Cultural de Verano de Boca del Río “Bocafest 2009”.
14. No se devolverán los trabajos no premiados, los cuales se destruirán toda vez que se conozca el fallo del
jurado. Las plicas de identiﬁcación correspondientes también serán destruidas.
15. En cuanto a las dos obras ganadoras, los concursantes aceptan de antemano que, en caso de controversia,
el manuscrito podrá ser consultado por las autoridades competentes.
16. La participación en este concurso implica la aceptación de las bases de la presente convocatoria.
17. Todo lo no previsto en esta convocatoria, será resuelto por el comité establecido para este premio.

Short Story Collection by De Pierola

Sur y Norte will be presented as part of The Dishonest Mailman Reading and Lecture Series organized by the Department of Creative Writing. (September 26, 7pm, Student Union 312)

Sur y Norte's characters are always negotiating cultural and economic differences, and, naturally, their efforts not always produce the expected outcomes. Four short stories take place in Perú, another four in California, and one tells a story about an illegal crossing of the American border. This collection of stories written from 1998 till 2007 includes: «En el vientre de la noche», winner of the international award Max Aub from Spain.
